The Region of Achievable Rates for Multiterminal Source Coding–Part I

چکیده

It is proved that a convexified form of the Berger-Tung inner bound provides the set of all achievable rates for the multiterminal source coding problem. In this paper, a proof is developed for general discrete memoryless sources and bounded distortion measures, for two encoding terminals. The proof is based on two new developments. One is the construction of new inner and outer bounds to the rate region, with the property that both are defined over the same class of probability distributions, thus making them directly comparable. Another is a series of lemmas about properties of covers induced by generic distributed codes, which show that Berger-Tung codes induce covers of maximum size. This result constitutes a solution to an open problem in network information theory, whose formulation dates back to at least 1973.

Subset Typicality Lemmas and Improved Achievable Regions in Multiterminal Source Coding

Consider the following information theoretic setup wherein independent codebooks of N correlated random variables are generated according to their respective marginals. The problem of determining the conditions on the rates of codebooks to ensure the existence of at least one codeword tuple which is jointly typical with respect to a given joint density (called the multivariate covering lemma) h...

Multiterminal Source-Channel Communication Under Orthogonal Multiple Access

We consider the problem of multiterminal source-channel communication where a number of distributed and possibly correlated sources are transmitted through an orthogonal multiple access channel to a common destination. We characterize the optimal tradeoff between the transmission cost Γ and the distortion vector D as measured against individual sources. Our approach consists of two steps: (1) a...

The Achievable Rate-Distortion Region for Distributed Source Coding with One Distortion Criterion and Correlated Messages

In this paper, distributed (or multiterminal) source coding with one distortion criterion and correlated messages is considered. This problem can be also called “Berger-Yeung problem with correlated messages”. It corresponds to the source coding part of the graph-based framework for transmission of a pair of correlated sources over the multiple-access channel (MAC) where one is lossless and the...

A Note on Cooperative Multiterminal Source Coding

We consider the multiterminal source coding problem with partially cooperating encoders. In the lossless case, we give a simple proof for a coding theorem that extends the result of Slepian and Wolf for non-cooperating encoders, resulting in a complete characterization of the rate region under this scenario. Then we extend this setup to consider an arbitrary pair of distortions (D1, D2), where ...

Generalized Gaussian Multiterminal Source Coding: The Symmetric Case

Consider a generalized multiterminal source coding system, where ( l m ) encoders, each observing a distinct sizem subset of l (l ≥ 2) zero-mean unit-variance symmetrically correlated Gaussian sources with correlation coefficient ρ, compress their observations in such a way that a joint decoder can reconstruct the sources within a prescribed mean squared error distortion based on the compressed...
